27 June 2007 ~ Martin Jeffreys at Darthaven Marina is experiencing a surge in demand for marine electronics equipment as the boats and crews taking part in the 2007 Classic Channel Regatta arrive in Dartmouth for the start of this year’s event.
“We’ve been working with several of the classic boats taking part in the regatta this year already,” says Martin. “Many of them come into the marina to get updates on their electronic charts, and to see that latest software and enhancements for their systems. While they are here, they use the marine facilities and chandlery, so it’s a busy time for all of us.”
Darthaven Marina is the local service and dealer for Raymarine, one of the main sponsors of the Classic Channel Regatta which takes place from 29 June – 7 July 2007. The event, now in its second year, is open to yachts of classic and traditional design launched before 1975. This year over 80 yachts have already entered, including Lutine, which was owned by the Lloyds of London Sailing Club and raced extensively in the 1950’s, and Clarionet, one of the most successful racing yachts from the 1960’s.
The Classic Channel Regatta starts with two days of racing at Dartmouth, before the Classic Channel Race sets off to St Malo. After an inshore race and rest day, the group continues with an overnight passage race to St Peter Port, and then the event concludes with the Classic Round Sark race.
Raymarine is providing the prizes for the Classic Channel Race to St Malo, where the winners and runners up from each class will receive products from Raymarine’s electronic products range including a C Series Chart Plotter/Display, Raystar 125GPS antenna and AIS receiver, LifeTag Man Overboard system, and Ray101E hand held VHF radio.
Bruce Thorogood of the Classic Channel organising committee said: “We’re delighted that Raymarine is a major sponsor, and one that provides real benefit to the participants in this regatta. We’re delighted to see the appeal of the Classic Channel regatta has spread wide and far, with boats from all over the UK and France, and even an all American crew from New York Yacht Club taking part on the classic 54 foot yacht NightWatch.”
Martin Jeffreys agrees, “This is a really popular regatta and a great event for Dartmouth. It brings some really beautiful boats into the Dart, and lots of people come to look at them and think of long lazy days on the water. But it creates such a surge in business, I’m too busy doing last minute electronic updates or calibrations to really appreciate them!”
