Friday 26 February 2010 – Raymarine’s popular “hands-on” radar training courses are back this spring, with a series of dates announced at venues around the country. The courses are designed to help users understand how radar works, learn new skills and improve their boating abilities and safety practices, working hands-on with Raymarine’s multifunction E120 display. The one day courses take place at Portsmouth, Plymouth, Falmouth, Shepperton and Brighton, running from March to May, and full details are available on Raymarine’s website at www.raymarine.co.uk/training.
The courses are being held by Alan Watson, one of the ‘Ask the Experts’ at the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show, who has over 30 years of experience in this sector. Alan trained and served as a Merchant Navy Electronics Officer, and holds a Board of Trade Certificate for the maintenance of radar. His lively and informative courses focus on helping attendees gain a greater understanding of radar, with technical advice and demonstrations on how the Raymarine multifunction displays work with radar and AIS inputs. Understanding how to interpret images shown on screen will prove useful even for experienced radar users. With each delegate benefiting from the use of a Raymarine multifunction display, this will ensure plenty of “hands-on” experience. As each attendee has sole access to a Raymarine radar, places are limited to 15 attendees per course.
The day long course costs £85.00+ VAT per person which includes lunch as well as morning coffee and afternoon tea, and can be booked online at Raymarine’s website www.raymarine.com/training.

About Alan Watson: Alan trained as a radio officer in the Merchant Navy, becoming Electronics Officer, with responsibility for all electronics systems onboard ships. During his time at sea, he was onboard tankers, container ships, general cargo vessels, dredgers and a dynamic positioned drill ship in the South Atlantic. In 1980 he moved ashore, and worked in the broadcast industry on high power transmitters, where he played a key role in the development of digital TV, which resulted in the subsequent conversion of the UK from analogue to digital systems. In the mid 1990s Alan became an RYA qualified trainer and examiner covering RYA radar, VHF, dayskipper and yachtmaster theory courses, as well as diesel engine maintenance. He set up a marine school, Trinity Nautical Training, which specialises in courses on radar and marine electronic systems. He still spends time at sea on board his Nelson 42 Trinity Star. He is also Chairman of The Medusa Trust, responsible for the restoration of HMS Medusa, a WW2 royal Navy launch.
