February 2008 ~ Raymarine is offering individuals the opportunity to learn new skills and improve their boating abilities and practices at specific training sessions in early Spring.

Taking place at Raymarine’s Head Office in Portsmouth on 29 February, 14 March and 11 April from 0900 to 1300, qualified RYA instructor, Alan Watson, will be undertaking structured training demonstrations – focusing specifically on radars.

With more than 35 years experience, Alan, who trained and served as a Merchant Navy Electronics Officer, holds a Board of Trade Certificate for the maintenance of radar, and is also an RYA instructor for radio and diesel engines. During his time in the Navy he installed, maintained and operated radars on a variety of ships from large containers and super tankers through to small coastal vessels.

Raymarine offers various marine radar systems – namely in their C Series, E Series and recently launched G Series. In addition to gaining a greater understanding of radars, Alan will be on hand to give technical advice and demonstrations on how the E Series works with AIS receivers to enable automatic voiceless exchange of vessel and navigational information between vessel or shore station equipped with similar receivers.

Alan said: "Radar is an essential tool for collision avoidance, especially in poor visibility, but only if you know how to use it and are able to interpret the information it gives you. With some simple rules, and a little experience, radar can be a real friend to ensure safety at sea."

There will be one multi-function display per delegate to ensure plenty of “hands-on” experience and there will be plenty of opportunity for questions and answers.

The radar training sessions are being offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and must be pre-booked by online at www.raymarine.co.uk/radartraining or by emailling info@raymarine.com.

With capacity for just ten people per training session, those interested should logon to the Raymarine website quickly to take advantage of this unique opportunity for a practical seminar under the guidance of qualified RYA instructor.
